Our favourite day in Yellowstone National Park: Hiking at Yellowstone Grand Canyon, which is officially called the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Before this trip we didn’t even know that Yellowstone had a Grand Canyon. To be honest, we only ever heard of the real big Grand Canyon.
We started at Uncle Tom’s Trail and walked all the 328 steps down and up again to watch the impressive Lower Falls. This waterfall is twice as high as Niagara Falls! (just have a look at the ant-sized people in the top right of the picture below and you’ll get an idea). Enjoy the fresh breeze on your face before you start the climb up – quite heavy when you’re carrying a 13 kilo toddler on your back! From the top, follow the path along the canyon until you reach Artist Point. Don’t mind the tourists and try to enjoy the view from here. It’s amazing: the canyon, the river and the gigantic waterfall in the back.
From Artist Point you can turn right to continue your hike – just follow the signs to Lily Point and Clear Lake. This is where you will leave the crowds behind and the serene – perhaps most beautiful – part of the hike begins. The path through the woods first takes you to Lily Pond, which is filled with….lilies. And Clear Lake is so crystal clear and blue that it almost looks like a tiled pool. It would be the perfect picnic spot, if swimming was an option. But the water is super hot, you can even see it boil and steam in some places.
